We’ve all seen Nancy Pelosi on television, stating emphatically, hand gestures and all - heck, I think she even managed to force her botox-paralyzed facial muscles to produce an expression approximating anger - that she was never briefed on waterboarding and other enhanced interrogation techniques.
On April 23rd, she said the following:
“We were not — I repeat — were not told that waterboarding or any of these other enhanced interrogation methods were used. What they did tell us is that they had . . . the Office of Legal Counsel opinions [and] that they could be used, but not that they would…”
and
“Flat out, they never briefed us that this was happening,”
On March 28, 2002, Abu Zubaydah, a high-level Al-Queda member and close associate of Osama Bin Laden, was captured by FBI and CIA agents. Waterboarding, as an Enhanced Interrogation technique, was approved by the U.S. government for use on Abu Zubaydah on approximately August 1st 2002; Zubaydah was subsequently waterboarded multiple times throughout the month of August 2002.
Fast forward to the present. According to a report prepared by the Director of National Intelligence’s office and obtained/released by ABC News today, on September 9 2002, Nancy Pelosi and Porter Goss were present, and apparently the only attendees beside a couple of staffers, at meeting described in the report as a “Briefing on EITs including use of EITs on Abu Zubaydah, background on authorities, and a description of particular EITs that had been employed.â€
That date, 9/9/2002 is nine days after the first round of waterboarding on Abu Zubaydah was completed.
This means:
- Speaker Pelosi was, in fact, briefed on waterboarding both in general terms AND as applied to a current detainee
- She is flat-out lying to the American people when she says “they never briefed us that this was happening”
- She attended the very first briefing on EITs e-v-e-r.
In her desperation to paint the Bush white house in particular and Republicans in general as some kind of animals while simultaneously trying to portray herself as being somehow above it all, Nancy Pelosi wagered - somewhat recklessly it would seem - that she would be able to tell a whopper like “Flat out, they never briefed us that this was happening,” without anyone finding out the truth.
How stupid does she think we are? We knew she was lying, but now we know she was lying.
