Someone close to me was in a car accident this past Friday night. She was ejected from the vehicle at a speed of – according to the cop who was driving right behind them when it happened – approximately 40 mph.
She was transported by ambulance to a large, well-respected and technologically advanced local hospital where she was first treated in the emergency room (including full cat scan) and then moved to a private room for the night. She was released the following day with her wounds dressed, a prescription in hand, and an appointment for a follow-up visit.
Oh yeah….. she has no insurance, no money, and a just-above-minimum-wage income.
We haven’t seen a bill for services rendered yet, but I’d be surprised if it’s less than $10,000.00. What we have seen is the envelope that the bill was mailed in, but which the post office mangled to such a degree that all that was left was the ‘payment agreement’ page with her expected monthly payment.
Take a guess how much the hospital expects her to pay per month?

Precedent Obama has been trying to sell America the idea that the poor have no access to healthcare. We’ve been calling Obama on his bullshit since day one, and this story is but one more example of how our healthcare system does not need Obama’s ‘help’, at least not the type of help he proposes.
Obama’s healthcare plan doesn’t have the first thing to do with healthcare; it has everything to do with growing the welfare state to levels unsustainable by the productive, tax-paying members of society. Adding a 1.5 $TRILLION healthcare bill to a 1.8 $Trillion defecit will only further push the country to financial ruin while simultaneously expanding and solidifying his socialist constituency.
Please for the love of God, America, wake the fuck up.

I’d be willing to guess that the total bill is less than you’re fearing based on a couple trips to the ER I’ve made over the last 4 or 5 years for concussions. Yep, CT scans are expensive and whatnot, but I *believe* the total bill was in the $3500 range. Plus a new helmet…

Oh – side note: when does the pool start for guessing the date the Post Office shuts its doors for good? Other than junk mail, what purpose do they serve any more? Is there an entity more useless than Amtrak other than the P.O.?
I based that estimate on a recent trip to the ER for a stomach problem (no, not a ‘Ay Caramba, mucho Tecate’ problem, but a ‘holy shit, am I dying?’ problem.). Three and a half hours cost us $4k. No new helmet though….not even a lollipop come to think of it.
I was overwhelmed at the bill from the concussion visits, but not to the point where it looked like a bill from a childbirth… The total bill for the c-section delivery of the person in question at the concussion visits was around $10K. Admittedly, that was in 1991 dollars, but WTF???
