House Energy and Commerce Committee Approves Healthcare Bill

Four of the critical seven Blue Dogs either caved, or held out until Pelosi and Reid met their asking price. They are:

  • Mike Ross (D-Ark.)
  • Bart Gordon (D-Tenn.)
  • Baron Hill (D-Ind.)
  • Zack Space (D-Ohio)

Remember these ‘men’ – men who would sell out their liberty and that of their countrymen for the benefit of the welfare state – come election time.

The Blue Dogs who held their ground and voted against the bill:

  • Jim Matheson (D-Utah)
  • Reps. John Barrow (D-Ga.)
  • Charlie Melancon (D-La.)

Joining these three Blue Dogs was Bart Stupak (D-Mich.), who is not a Blue Dog but often votes with them.

From The Associated Press:

WASHINGTON — Democrats have pushed sweeping health care legislation through a key congressional committee, clearing the way for a September showdown on President Barack Obama’s top domestic priority.

The 31-28 vote Friday came after majority Democrats on the Energy and Commerce Committee agreed to a last-minute series of changes including limiting how much health insurance companies can raise premiums.

The changes were made to placate liberal Democrats — who rebelled after a deal was struck earlier in the week with conservative Democrats.

Energy and Commerce was the last of three House committees to act on the health bill. The vote came on the last day of the House’s session before its annual summer recess, sending Democrats home with some momentum on health care.

Members of congress return to their home districts on August 3rd for the summer recess, and then head back to Washington on September 4th. They need to hear from us every single day during this time. If you have a local TEA party group in your area, odds are there will be at least one organized protest during this time frame.

Many groups are in the process of organizing a Recess Rally for August 22nd, check out the Recess Rally website for more information.

The fight is only going to get tougher from here. Pro-Obamacare advocates were going door-to-door in my neighborhood today; we conservatives generally do not have the luxury of tax-subsidised advocacy groups to do our legwork for us, but we have to continue to be vocal, visible, and firm.

We can stop this. Overdrive, baby.

Judicial Watch: Feds Order Illegal Aliens Released

The Homeland Security agency responsible for enforcing federal immigration laws ordered a local sheriff to release dozens of illegal immigrants arrested during a recent crime suppression operation.

The three-day sweep in Arizona’s Maricopa County led to the arrest of 74 suspected illegal aliens, ten of which immediately admitted they were in the U.S. illegally. At least 25 were detained for a few days and should have been deported by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the largest investigative agency in the Department of Homeland Security which supposedly enforces immigration laws. more…..

Victor Davis Hanson: Our Angry Aristocracy
Scolding Americans for our various sins is proving popular among an elite group of self-appointed moralists. Take well-meaning environmentalists who warn us that our plush lifestyles heat up and pollute the planet. To listen to former vice president Al Gore or New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman, we must immediately curtail our carbon emissions — or face planetary destruction.

Yet these influential prophets of doom do not have lives remotely similar to the lesser folk they lecture. From time to time, Al Gore hops on a private jet — and purchases “carbon offsets” as penances for the privilege. His mansion not long ago consumed more energy in a month than the average American home does in a year. more…..

N.C. Patriots Out In Force To Protest Obamacare

Raleigh, NC:

Local Patriots were out in force this afternoon in  protest of Barack Obama’s appearance at Broughton High School to push his healthcare reform proposals. I haven’t seen any crowd size estimates yet, but as the pictures (linked below) clearly show, the turnout was substantial. There were some liberal pro-hope-and-change protesters there as well, but it is my understanding that we had them outnumbered by a substantial amount – a theme, incidentally,  that’s been duplicated all over the country recently.

Some pics, videos and stories from those who were there:

Cnation’s Picks 7/28/09 – The ‘Obama’s Coming To Town’ edition

Victor Davis Hanson: What Happened to Our Postracial President?
Obama has unwittingly made his real beliefs clear.
From time to time, Condoleezza Rice, Colin Powell, and Clarence Thomas have naturally talked about growing up African-American under far less tolerant conditions than those we take for granted today. Yet their biggest contributions to American race relations have been their admirable abilities to transcend such racial intolerance — to make being black incidental, not essential, at least in public, to their sterling characters and impressive achievements. more…..

Fred Barnes: Know-Nothing-in-Chief
Is President Obama an economic illiterate? Harsh as that sounds, there’s growing evidence he understands little about economics and even less about economic growth or job creation. Yet, as we saw at last week’s presidential press conference, he’s undeterred from holding forth, with seeming confidence, on economic issues…A good example of Obama’s economic shallowness is his unrelenting defense of the $787 billion “stimulus.” Enacted in February, it has had minimal impact on the economy. Yet Obama has no second thoughts. He says he wouldn’t change a thing about the stimulus. It has “already saved jobs and created new ones,” he said at the press conference, neglecting to note that 2 million jobs–a net 2 million–have been lost since it was passed. more…..

NRO: The Prognosis For Obamacare
The Blue Dogs are in this fight, in part, because of their stated concerns over growing budget deficits and unaffordable entitlements. The president reiterated again last week that he is determined to sign a bill that slows the pace of rising costs and improves our long-term fiscal outlook.

Well, here’s a bill that would go in exactly the opposite direction from what the authors say is their objective, according to CBO. It would add a third runaway health-care entitlement program to the two already on the books (Medicare and Medicaid) with no prospect in sight that spending on any of them will ever come in line with the government’s revenue base. more…..

Audio/Video Clip From Newsbusters via Drudge: Obama 2004: Bush Rushed Legislation Through Congress Without Allowing Time to Read Or Debate
A heretofore “unknown” 2004 interview with Barack Obama by leftwing radio host Randi Rhodes has just emerged. And basically, as you shall hear, Obama is saying do as I say, not as I do. In this case he was referring to quickly forcing legislation through congress. Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio promised to keep his controversial crime-suppression operations coming despite a change in federal guidelines that will prevent deputies from arresting immigrants solely for being in the country illegally. Deputies witnessed the impact of the new regulations during one of the operations Thursday and Friday in the southeast Valley after they released nine people from custody. The nine were suspected to be in the country illegally, but because they had committed no other criminal or civil violations, the deputies said federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents instructed them to let the nine go free. more…..

Connie Hair: Carter & Co. Kick House Censors
Democrat censorship of House Republicans’ constituent mailings has reached Orwellian levels.  Republican members of the House Monday night took to the House floor during Special Orders speeches and gave examples of some of the censorship horror stories…. House Democrats are engaging in a gross abuse of power by censoring the ability of Republicans to communicate the facts to their constituents in a timely manner. “If they take away free speech from members of Congress, when will they take it away from the press?” Carter asked from the House floor.  “When will they take it away from the people?” more…..

Lloyd Marcus: Bias you can BET on
With the majority of black Americans getting their news from black and white liberal-biased media, there is very little chance of them hearing the truth. Fortunately, I escaped the liberal plantation in the early 90s when I was exposed to Rush Limbaugh. Listening to Rush introduced me to brilliant black conservatives like Thomas Sowell and Walter Williams.
I thought, “Why haven’t these guys been featured on Oprah or honored at the NAACP awards?”
Answer: These blacks are paradigm breakers. They do not fit the “we are black, thus special concessions must be made for us” template.

John Conyers: What, Me Read The Bills?

Rep John Conyers of Michigan, gives us a glimpse into one very large reason behind the passage of things like the stimulus bill, Cap & Trade, and now healthcare ‘reform’, which has so far made it through two congressional committees.

Last Friday, while addressing the National Press Club last week, Rep Conyers said the following:

I love these members that get up and say, “Read the bill!” What good is reading the bill if it’s a thousand pages and you don’t have two days and two lawyers to find out what it means after you’ve read the bill?

Here’s the video:

Here’s a guy whose very job is to help make and pass – quite literally – the laws of the land, and he can’t be bothered to read the bills that cross his desk.

The question then becomes: If it’s not worth reading, how can it possibly be worth voting on?

Where’s the major media on this?

Michelle Malkin: Culture of Corruption: Czars of the Obama Underworld
The Obama administration has created a two-tiered government—fronted by Cabinet secretaries able to withstand public scrutiny (some of them, just barely) and then managed behind the scenes by shadow secretaries with broad powers beyond congressional reach. Bureaucratic chaos serves as a useful smokescreen to obscure the true source of policy decision-making. Energy czar Carol Browner epitomized the secretive dealings of these offices when she advised auto industry executives this month “to put nothing in writing, ever” about their meetings with her.

While past administrations dating back to the Nixon era have designated such “super aides,” none has extended the concept as widely as Obama has. Currently, 35 out of 44 current “czar” slots are presidential appointments. They are among the highest-paid staffers at the White House. Most of Obama’s key czars have Cabinet counterparts already in place. more…..

Professor Gates is now saying that, if Sergeant Crowley publicly apologizes for his racism, the prof will graciously agree to “educate him about the history of racism in America.” Which is a helluva deal. Legal Insurrection: Thank God The CBO Works On Saturdays
The Congressional Budget Office once again has poked a massive hole in the Democratic health care “reform” bubble, in a report issued today….For the second time this month, congressional budget analysts have dealt a blow to the Democrat’s health reform efforts, this time by saying a plan touted by the White House as crucial to paying for the bill would actually save almost no money over 10 years.. more…..

Charles Krauthammer: Why Obamacare Is Sinking
President Obama premised the need for reform on the claim that medical costs are destroying the economy. True. But now we learn — surprise! — that universal coverage increases costs. The congressional Democrats’ health-care plans, says the CBO, increase costs on the order of $1 trillion plus.

In response, the president retreated to a demand that any bill he sign be revenue-neutral. But that’s classic misdirection: If the fierce urgency of health-care reform is to radically reduce costs that are producing budget-destroying deficits, revenue neutrality (by definition) leaves us on precisely the same path to insolvency that Obama himself declares unsustainable. more…..

James C. Capretta & Yuval Levin: Obamacare: It’s Even Worse Than You Think
The next few weeks will be crucial to the future of American health care and American prosperity.
President Obama’s strategy to pass sweeping health care legislation rested on stealth and speed. The idea was to fill the conversation for months on end with vague talk about expanding coverage, “bending the cost-curve,” improving quality, and rooting out waste, without showing the public how the plan would actually work or what it would cost. Legislation, meanwhile, would be composed behind closed doors, and the bills would be introduced as close as possible to when they might come up for a vote to minimize the time in which they could actually be read and thought about by those who would vote on them and those who would live under them. By the time the details emerged, maybe momentum and being “closer than ever before” would be enough to overcome the torrent of objections that were sure to be raised when people got a real look at the nuts and bolts. more…..

The ‘Post-Racial’ President’s True Colors

Responding to a  question by Lynn Sweet of the Chicago Sun Times – who, it seems, came to the show intending to mine a bit of racial sensationalism out of the arrest Harvard professor and Obama personal friend Henry Gates – Obama manages to show yet again how, contrary to his ‘post-racial’ campaign rhetoric, he is absolutely all about race. It’s all he sees in people. Which, in my opinion, is in and of itself a very strong indicator of  a person’s inherent racism.

First, the video:

Now, the police report:

On Thursday July 16, 2009, Henry Gates, Jr. – -, of Ware Street, Cambridge, MA) was placed under arrest at Ware Street, after being observed exhibiting loud and tumultuous behavior, in a public place, directed at a uniformed police officer who was present investigating a report of a crime in progress. These actions on the behalf of Gates served no legitimate purpose and caused citizens passing by this location to stop and take notice while appearing surprised and alarmed.

…When I arrived at Ware Street I radioed ECC and asked that they have the caller meet me at the front door to this residence. I was told that the caller was already outside. As I was getting this information, I climbed the porch stairs toward the front door. As [reached the door, a female voice called out to me. I looked in the direction of the voice and observed a white female, later identified {} who was standing on the sidewalk in front of the residence, held a wireless telephone in her hand arid told me that it was she who called. She went on to tell me that she observed what appeared to be two black males with backpacks on the porch of• Ware Street. She told me that her suspicions were aroused when she observed one of the men wedging his shoulder into the door as if he was trying to force entry. Since I was the only police officer on location and had my back to the front door as I spoke with her, I asked that she wait for other responding officers while I investigated further.

As I turned and faced the door, I could see an older black male standing in the foyer of {} Ware Street. I made this observation through the glass paned front door. As I stood in plain view of this man, later identified as Gates, I asked if he would step out onto the porch and speak with me. He replied “no I will not”. He then demanded to know who I was. I told him that I was “Sgt. Crowley from the Cambridge Police” and that I was “investigating a report of a break in progress” at the residence. While I was making this statement, Gates opened the front door and exclaimed “why, because I’m a black man in America?”. I then asked Gates if there was anyone else in the residence. While yelling, he told me that it was none of my business and accused me of being a racist police officer. I assured Gates that I was responding to a citizen’s call to the Cambridge Police and that the caller was outside as we spoke. Gates seemed to ignore me and picked up a cordless telephone and dialed an unknown telephone number. As he did so, I radioed on channel I that I was off in the residence with someone who appeared to be a resident but very uncooperative. I then overheard Gates asking the person on the other end of his telephone call to “get the chief’ and “whats the chiefs name?’. Gates was telling the person on the other end of the call that he was dealing with a racist police officer in his home. Gates then turned to me and told me that I had no idea who I was “messing” with and that I had not heard the last of it. While I was led to believe that Gates was lawfully in the residence, I was quite surprised and confused with the behavior he exhibited toward me. I asked Gates to provide me with photo identification so that I could verify that he resided at Ware Street and so that I could radio my findings to ECC. Gates initially refused, demanding that I show him identification but then did supply me with a Harvard University identification card. Upon learning that Gates was affiliated with Harvard, I radioed and requested the presence of the Harvard University Police.

With the Harvard University identification in hand, I radioed my findings to ECC on channel two and prepared to leave. Gates again asked for my name which I began to provide. Gates began to yell over my spoken words by accusing me of being a racist police officer and leveling threats that he wasn’t someone to mess with. At some point during this exchange, I became aware that Off. Carlos Figueroa was standing behind me. When Gates asked a third time for my name, I explained to him that I had provided it at his request two separate times. Gates continued to yell at me. I told Gates that I was leaving his residence and that if he had any other questions regarding the matter, I would speak with him outside of the residence.

As I began walking through the foyer toward the front door, I could hear Gates agai,n demanding my name. I again told Gates that I would speak with him outside. My reason for wanting to leave the residence was that Gates was yelling very loud and the acoustics of the kitchen and foyer were making it difficult for me to transmit pertinent information to ECC or other responding units. His reply was “ya, I’ll speak with your mama outside”. When I left the residence, I noted that there were several Cambridge and Harvard University police officers assembled on the sidewalk in front of the residence. Additionally, the caller, md at least seven unidentified passers-by were looking in the direction of Gates, who had followed me outside of the residence.

As I descended the stairs to the sidewalk, Gates continued to yell at me, accusing me of racial bias and continued to tell me that I had not heard the last of him. Due to the tumultuous manner Gates had exhibited in his residence as well as his continued tumultuous behavior outside the residence, in view of the public, I warned Gates that he was becoming disorderly. Gates ignored my warning and continued to yell, which drew the attention of both the police officers and citizens, who appeared surprised and alarmed by Gates’s outburst. For a second time I warned Gates to calm down while I withdrew my department issued handcuffs from their carrying case. Gates again ignored my warning and continued to yell at me. It was at this time that I informed Gates that he was under arrest. I then stepped up the stairs, onto the porch and attempted to place handcuffs on Gates. Gates initially resisted my attempt to handcuff him, yelling that he was “disabled” and would fall without his cane. After the handcuffs were property applied, Gates complained that they were too tight. I ordered Off. Ivey, who was among the responding officers, to handcuff Gates with his arms in front of him for his comfort while I secured a cane for Gates from within the residence. I then asked Gates if he would like an officer to take possession of his house key and secure his front door, which he left wide open. Gates told me that the door was un securable due to a previous break attempt at the residence. Shortly thereafter, a Harvard University maintenance person arrived on scene and appeared familiar with Gates. I asked Gates if he was comfortable with this Harvard University maintenance person securing his residence. He told me that he was.

Gates Arrest Report PDF file

You know, the more I watch the video, the more I think this question by Lynn Sweet was scripted by the white house. In fact, I’d bet on it.

It’s nice to know, however, that after spending the evening attacking doctors, insurance companies and the ‘rich’, he still had a few moments left to go after the evil white man..

Moments like this are why they try to keep this disgraceful excuse for a president chained to a teleprompter. His response – if he had any sense, class, respect for law enforcement or for his own position as president of the United States, should have been something to the effect of “without knowing the facts of the case, I cannot comment on it one way or the other“.

Instead, the leader of the free world took the opportunity to belittle law enforcement, stoke the flames of racial tension, and do some campaign-style pandering to his core constituency – all without having the slightest idea of what really happened.

If you’re expecting an apology from the race-baiter-in-chief though, don’t hold your breath. It ain’t happening.

Finally, here’s CNN’s brief report on the arresting officer, Sgt. James Crowley of the Cambridge Police Department.
