For those with a few extra minutes to spare, I am including a video of Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas) addressing the Senate this past Monday 10/28/09 on the realities of the so-called ‘public option’. It runs approx. 15 minutes and is worth the time to watch.

In Ireland and the UK we have the choice of a public or private option, just as the US will have if this bill passes. Some employers provide health benefit and some don’t. For those of us who are not covered by an employer there is a range of competitive health insurance plans (less expensivve than the US from what I have seen, thanks to government regulation), and the public option. Yes, the public option means waiting lists for surgery for those who are on it, but for everything else – basic GP visits, emergency care, maternity care, etc – the care is right there and available on demand, and covers those who would not have insurance otherwise. The drawbacks of the public option are enough to encourge people to go private – thereby continuing to support the insurance industry – but on the other hand it means that those who would not be able to see a doctor or avail of basic services otherwise can do so.
Don’t believe those who try to tell you that the system on this side of the pond means interminable waits for everyone, a “broken” healthcare system, etc etc. I’ve seen those particular US ads sponsored by the insurance industry and their allies and I can tell you from 30+ years of living here that they are bunk.
