NY-23: Owens Breaks 4 Campaign Promises in first hour in Congress

News like this could only surprise those stupid enough to have believed a Democrat’s campaign promises in the first place, and stupid people  read ‘Newshounds’ and ‘Crooks and Liars’, not Conservative Nation.

Owens Breaks 4 Campaign Promises in first hour in Congress

Bill Owens, Newest Congressional Liar

Bill Owens, Newest Congressional Liar

GOUVERNEUR, NY – Congressman-elect Bill Owens was sworn in at noon today.

Owens indicated in a press release released shortly afterwards that he was now in favor of the the “Affordable Healthcare for America Act” bill in direct contrast to his earlier position during the election campaign.

According to Politico.com, Mr. Owens assured voters that he felt the public option had no place in the health care reform bill.  Contrary to that position, Mr. Owens now indicates that he intends to vote in favor of the bill even though it now contains a public option.

UPDATED: A spokesman for Congressman Owens indicated correctly that Mr. Owens had recanted his solid position against public option later in the campaign, clarifying that he did not wish public option to be a ‘litmus test’ for the Health Reform bill and that on Oct. 30th, several days prior to the election, in a debate had stated that he generally supported the public option as it was now written (at that time.)

Mr. Owens also indicated during his campaign that he was firmly opposed to cutting Medicare benefits, taxing health care benefits, and increased taxes on the middle class in any way as you can see clearly in the screenshot below, taken directly from Mr. Owens’ campaign website.

Click for larger image Click to enlarge image

The House Health reform bill contains sections that cut Medicare benefits, tax existing health care benefits, and increases taxes on the middle class, yet Mr. Owens stated today that he will now vote in favor of those things contrary to what he had promised the voters of NY’s 23rd Congressional District that he would vote against.

Mr. Owens indicated in his press release today that “This legislation will reform the insurance industry and provide increased access to affordable healthcare without taxing healthcare benefits, cutting Medicare benefits or raising taxes on the middle class, and that is exactly the direction we need to go.”

When The Gouverneur Times attempted to contact Mr. Owens to clarify this information, we received no direct response to our phone or email inquiries.  Both FactCheck.org and the Congressional Budget Office agree that HR 3962 contains potentially hundreds of billions of dollars in planned cuts to Medicare, yet Mr. Owens indicates that he supports this legislation and says that it does not cut Medicare benefits.  Either Mr. Owens has been snowed or the public is about to be.

HR 3962 also includes a range of various taxes on middle-class families as well as language to repeal tax relief already in place.  Has Congressman Owens blindly followed Ms. Pelosi’s rhetoric in believing that the end to a tax cut is not the same thing as an increase in taxes or is he hedging his bet with very carefully chosen words?

HR 3962 now also contains language that allows illegal immigrants to be covered under the legislation.  When The Gouverneur Times attempted to contact Mr. Owens for clarification of this language, we received no response other than the press release heretofore mentioned.  Specifically, we asked if illegal immigrants would be forced to purchase healthcare insurance as citizens will be and whether or not they would be forced to do so at standard rates or if they would qualify for the public option subsidy.

The Associated Press said this morning that: “House leaders said that, in keeping with the Hispanic Caucus’ demands, there was not likely to be any prohibition added to the House bill against illegal immigrants shopping in the exchange.”

In a speech made to Congress a short time ago, President Obama had stated that the bill would not contain support for illegal immigrants – a statement for which he was called a “liar” by Rep. Joe Wilson.  Rep. Wilson was severely chastised for his comment at the time though it would now seem to be true.

The mixed-up mess that was the 23rd Congressional District Special Election was a close race between Democrat Bill Owens and Conservative Doug Hoffman.  Many feel that it was unlikely Mr. Owens would have won those crucial few thousand votes if the voting public was aware of his intent with regard to the Health Care bill.  The majority of residents in this district do not support the Health Reform bill as it is now written and many feel like they’ve become victims of a fraud perpetrated by their chosen candidate.

Election Fraud in the Land of Hope and Change

ACORN. Organizing For America. Emanuel. Gaspard. SEIU. The Community Organizer In Chief himself.

Team Obama is out in force, and have dispatched their big guns in an attempt to steal the NY-23 Congressional and New Jersey gubernatorial races.

In New Jersey,  the Democrats are actively and openly – brazenly – trying to clear the way for absentee ballot fraud. According to the National Review:

This year, New Jersey’s registered voters can request a mail-in ballot for any reason. (Before 2005, voters needed to provide a reason for why they needed an absentee ballot.) The state received about 150,000 absentee-ballot applications this year.

On about 2,300 of those applications so far, the signature on the request form does not match the signature on the voter’s registration forms with the state.

In a development that is depressingly predictable, the New Jersey Democratic party is asking the state to provide provisional ballots for all these voters. Those ballots could, presumably, be used to overcome any narrow lead by Republican Chris Christie over Democrat Jon Corzine on Election Day.

In the Wall Street Journal, John Fund writes:

The state has received a flood of 180,000 absentee ballot requests. On some 3,000 forms the signature doesn’t match the one on file with county clerks. Yet citing concerns that voters would be disenfranchised, Democratic Party lawyer Paul Josephson wrote New Jersey’s secretary of state asking her “to instruct County Clerks not to deny applications on the basis of signature comparison alone.” Mr. Josephson maintained that county clerks “may be overworked and are likely not trained in handwriting analysis” and insisted that voters with suspect applications should be allowed to cast provisional ballots. Those ballots, of course, would then provide a pool of votes that would be subject to litigation in any recount, with the occupant of New Jersey’s highest office determined by Florida 2000-style scrutiny of ballot applications.

Yes, please pay no attention to the mis-matched signatures. Nothing funny going on here. Trust us…

So where is ACORN and the SEIU, you ask? From BigGovernment:

More telling that the fix is in, however, is the sudden appearance of ACORN on the scene. Not by name, mind you, as their reputation is so tarnished that even New Jersey Democrats don’t want to be associated with them. No, in New Jersey ACORN sought cover behind its big brother, SEIU, specifically SEIU Local 32BJ.

The political director for the SEIU local is Peter Colavito. Just last year, he was ACORN’s political director in New York, working directly under Bertha Lewis, ACORN’s CEO and co-chair of ACORN-backed Working Families Party. He was, and remains, a top official and board member of the Working Families Party in New York. In fact, his wife is currently an employee of the Working Families Party. Corzine has made much of his endorsement by the SEIU local, failing to mention the union’s deep ties to both ACORN and its Working Families Party in New York.

These ties are starting to appear, however. GOP officials recently received a phone tip from a hospital in Newark, reporting that people in ACORN t-shirts were in the facility signing up and collecting absentee ballots. New Jersey law allows anyone to take up to 10 absentee ballots at a time. The tipster reported seeing individuals in the ACORN shirts entering the hospital with blank absentee ballots and leaving with completed ballots.

There are reports out of Camden, New Jersey that voters are discovering that absentee ballots have already been submitted under their name. They did not authorize these ballots. Early reports suggested that the number of absentee ballots ‘requested’ in Camden city is higher than in any previous election. This will no doubt spark confusion on election day.

In the mean time, Obama is actually robocalling for Corzine. That is a clear an indication as you’ll get how desperately Team Obama wants to keep Corzine in power, because – and they’ll deny this to the grave – the NJ governor’s race is a referendum on Team Obama, and a loss there may well be all it takes to make the Blue Dogs (fiscally conservative Democrats) walk away from Obamacare for good.

Up in New York meanwhile, Team Obama, including ACORN, are up to their necks in it in the 23rd district..

From Anita Moncrief (ex-ACORN worker / whistleblower):

Multiple sources on the ground in New York’s 23rd Congressional district confirm that ACORN is expected to be actively protesting the election results in Clinton County, New York tomorrow. This move comes on the heels of a legal win for the Hoffman camp today as it was ruled that all poll watchers would have to be registered voters of NY 23.
Rob Ryan, spokesman for the Hoffman campaign, states that the legal decision is all about ballot security and that the move by ACORN is not a surprise.

“The Working Family Party is desperate, Today’s poll show that Doug Hoffman is drawing votes from all Demographics”.

While the focus tomorrow will be on securing a win for Hoffman, Ryan says there are still worries about:  “voter intimidation, absentee ballot fraud and groups like ACORN/Working Families Party and big labor stealing the election from the people of the 23rd district.”

Among those who convinced Dede Scozzafava to endorse Democrat Bill Owens over the weekend was Patrick Gaspard, former SEIU vice-president, former ACORN political director, and currently Obama’s White House political affairs director.

Gateway Pundit had this to say about Gaspard:

So where does a far left political operative land after his organization is fined $775,000 for election violations that included hiring rapists and burglars to register voters?
Inside the Obama White House, of course.

Obama’s ACORN operative in the White House Patrick Gaspard is helping shape domestic policy… and the NY-23 race.

Patrick Gaspard, who has a long history of working with ACORN-affiliated organizations, was behind the scenes this weekend persuading former GOP candidate Scozzafava to endorse democrat Bill Owens in the NY-23 race.

The Washington Post reported: Steeped in New York politics, he played a pivotal role in the effort over the weekend to persuade Republican State Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava to endorse the Democratic candidate in the special election in New York’s 23rd Congressional District, two senior White House officials said Sunday. One senior official added that Gaspard was the “air traffic controller” of multiple parties as events in the district unfolded.

Last but not least, we have Organizing For America manning the phones in an attempt to ‘get out the vote’. But it’s not quite that simple. (it wouldn’t be, would it?).

From Bizzyblog: Organizing for America Potential Privacy Invasion, Robbery, Vote Fraud, and Worse in NY-23

Organizing For America’s nationally-orchestrated, last-ditch, get-out-the-vote campaign in NY-23 is a privacy-invading and potentially dangerous effort.

NY-23 residents should be aware that because of a pervasive lack of controls in OFA’s get-out-the-vote operations and a poorly designed campaign:

  • The person calling them could be a potential spammer, thief, or even a violent criminal.
  • That person will be asking for personal information that no one should be willing to give out, including but perhaps not limited to personal e-mail addresses, cell phone numbers, and the time of day voters plan to vote.
  • OFA may be unable to track down persons who call on its behalf if unauthorized, illegal, or criminal acts occur as a result of information learned during this campaign.

It doesn’t get any dirtier than this, folks. This is Obama ‘hope and change’ in full bloom. Pure leftist radical election stealing tactics being used right out in the open. And why not? It’s not like Eric Holder’s Justice Department is going to do anything about it… or have we already forgotten how he walked away from from a slam-dunk voter intimidation case – a case that the Justice Department had already won – against the Black Panthers earlier this year.

We all need to understand that there’s nothing the Democrats won’t do, no level they won’t sink to, no underhanded tactic they won’t try, in their effort to remain in power. They are this close to realizing their dream of destroying our nations wealth and prosperity and building their socialist paradise. If you think they’re going to go quietly, you are sorely mistaken. We need to be prepared to deal with what’s sure to be coming.

Finally, Moe Lane at RedState offers this bit of advice:

What can you do about it?

  1. If you’re a NJ voter, then vote for Chris Christie.  As the saying goes: if it isn’t close, they can’t cheat.
[if in NY, vote for Hoffman. -Cnation]
  2. If you have a video camera, make sure that you’re in the area of a vulnerable polling station (officially or not) and keep a lookout for shenanigans.  Go in a group, be prepared to run, and remember that the idea is to shine a light on skulduggery, not strike a blow for fair elections via street fighting.  Let the Democrats scream curses and vitriol at you.
  3. If you don’t have a video camera, go volunteer .  Also: get a video camera. We’ll have to do this again next year.

Do you understand  – and I mean really understand – who we’re dealing with here?

We fight these people every single day on every single front, or we lose it all.

From the ‘We Told You So’ File: Scozzafava Endorses the Democrat

Today, Dede Scozzafava endorsed Democrat Bill Owens in the NY-23 congressional election.

You remember Dede Scozzafava, the liberal that was running as a Republican?

In what is starting to become a recurring theme, Scozzafava turned out to be exactly who and what we said she was. Raise your hand if this surprises you in the least. Her endorsement of Owens comes after receiving calls from both Senator Chuck Schumer D-NY and Obama’s Chief of Staff Rahm Emmanuel, and meeting with Rep. Steve Israel (D-NY).

In the mean time, her campaign manager Matt Burns has endorsed Conservative candidate Doug Hoffman and had this to say about Sczzafava’s endorsement of Owens:

“In her heart of hearts, she’s a good person. She’s a capable legislator,” Burns said. “But I don’t think supporting a candidate who would back Nancy Pelosi is the best way to get our nation on the right track.”

Hard to believe this coming from a man who ‘ran’ (some might say ‘into the ground’) Scozzafava’s campaign, like he didn’t know his girl’s liberal history….but to his credit, at least he didn’t jump ship with her.

Newt Gingrich has now also decided to endorse Hoffman.

The theories on who exactly this will help are all over the place. One school believes that all the conservatives had already left Scozzafava for Hoffman, leaving only her liberal-leaning and union supporters, whould now theoretically move to Owens. Another school believes thas since Scozzafava was a Republican, her supporters will now line up behind Hoffman regardless of Scozzafava’s endorsement of the Democrat candidate. Some think this will change everything, some think it will change nothing. Personally, I have given up trying to figure it out.

I think – and this is something I’ve written in one form or other several times over the past couple of weeks – that regardless of how this turns out on Tuesday, conservatives have accomplished everything we’ve set out to do, and that was to deliver a message to the GOP that liberal candidates, or candidates who don’t support and believe in conservative principals, will no longer be tolerated.

Allahpundit over at Hot Air says it well:

But look. As gratifying as it would be to see Hoffman win, the guy didn’t become a conservative grassroots cause celebre because people are dying to see Doug Hoffman in Congress. He’s a cause celebre because conservatives wanted to send a message to the GOP about the future of the party, and that message has now been sentand received, to the tune of $900,000 down the toilet — regardless of what happens on Tuesday.

I would only add that even if the GOP didn’t/doesn’t get it, I’d still rather see a split vote deliver the seat to a Democrat before giving it to a Democrat pretending to be a Republican.

Breaking: Scozzafava Drops Out of NY-23 Race

In the wake of a new Siena poll showing her too far behind to catch up to either Conservative candidate Doug Hoffman or Democratic candidate Bill Owens, Republican candidate Dede Scozzafava today officially dropped out of the NY-23 special congressional election.

There are conflicting reports on whether she will throw her support to Hoffman, and no word yet on whether or not the National Republican Congressional Committe (NRCC), who had been backing Scozzafava, will now be supporting Hoffman in these final days before the election.

Regardless of how this plays out from here, the message from American conservatives to the political establishment has been delivered.

More more on this story as it becomes available.

Rush Limbaugh: Why NY-23 Isn’t a Third-Party Race

From Rushlimbaugh.com:

In NY-23, Real Clear Politics: “Doug Hoffman, plus five.”  Doug Hoffman may in fact win this with nowhere near the amount of money the two Democrats have.  I know there’s a Democrat called a Republican, but we actually have two liberal Obama Democrats, one calling herself a Republican, and you’ve got the Reagan conservative Hoffman in there.  Tim Pawlenty threw in with him today, by the way, so you have Sarah Palin, Fred Thompson, Rick Santorum, who else?  (interruption)  Sue Collins endorsed — so?  Is that a surprise?  That’s going to sway a lot of votes.  Susan Collins from Maine — who?  Endorsed Scozzafava?  You know, the Republican Party, I really do not know what Newt Gingrich was thinking.  Maybe he hasn’t gotten over the budget battle of 1995.  I don’t know, but this is stunning.  I ruined two hours of my day when I saw that the Republican Party was running ads against Hoffman.  They have a death wish.  The Republican Party has a death wish.  Gallup: 40% of Americans now say they are conservative, 20% say they’re liberal, 36% say they’re moderates.  And of those three groups, which one is being ignored — not just ignored — which one is being attacked by the Republican Party?  The conservatives!

Yes, We Can

“Our goal should not be a Republican majority. It should be a conservative majority. If the Republican party will not be conservative, then we are going to run against them . . . and we’re going to win.”

- Doug Hoffman, NY-23 Conservative Party candidate

A great article by Doug Hoffman in the National Review Online today:

Yes, We Can [Doug Hoffman ]

How quickly things can change.

Two weeks ago, political observers noticed a poll from New York’s 23rd congressional district that showed the liberal candidate fading fast and the conservative candidate gaining faster. This is the resurgence Republicans have been hoping for!

Unfortunately, the Republican party had nominated the liberal candidate. The conservative candidate is running against both the Republican party and the Democratic party.

Isn’t that a good metaphor for the state in which conservatives find themselves?

I am that conservative candidate for Congress in New York’s 23rd District, and I believe conservatives can win our fight.

Some thoughts on NY-23

I’m exhausted this evening, but I can’t get to sleep without at least commenting on the ever-evolving NY-23 race.

First, I think Sarah Palin’s endorsement of Conservative party candidate Doug Hoffman is as much about her sticking a toe back in the political waters as anything else. Her disappointing resignation from the Alaska governership aside, I think she’s fantastic. A lot of people think she is, but then a lot of people can’t stand her. There’s no denying she’s about as polarizing a political figure as there is, so it’ll be interesting to see how her endorsement of Hoffman plays out. My opinion is that it probably won’t hurt considering that Hoffman’s base up to this point is primarily composed of conservatives who are in all likelihood Palin supporters anyway, so not a lot of risk there. However, as Allahpundit at hotair.com opines, there is a definite risk of Palin’s entrance into the fray galvanizing Democrat opposition to Hoffman.

What remains to be seen – and really, what is in many ways more important in a big picture sort of way – is how much more of the vote she can bring to Hoffman. If she succeeds in putting Hoffman over the top, the shockwaves through the Republican establishment will be immediate and rather brutal. They will have no choice but to reevaluate the wisdom of continuing to run liberal candidates such as Scozzafava, and will have to weigh the risk of doing so against the potential for permanently alienating the conservative base and remaining the minority party in perpetuity.

And, inasmuch as this election has now pretty much become a referendum not just on fiscal and social conservatism in general vs. the ‘big tent’ Republican, but also on Sarah Palin, the values she represents and her future viability in the political arena, a conservative win in this election holds the very real potential to set in motion either the reversal of the GOP’s staggering decline, or the acceleration of its final descent into irrelevance.

No matter how this shakes out though, the one message the GOP better be getting loud and clear is that they need us a whole lot more than we need them.

Between you and me, I’m looking forward to the day when I can once again proudly display an “R” next to my name.

CNN: Major cash haul for conservative third-party candidate in NY

Palin Endorses Hoffman in NY-23

This is great news. From Palin’s Facebook page:

Support Doug Hoffman

The people of the 23rd Congressional District of New York are ready to shake things up, and Doug Hoffman is coming on strong as Election Day approaches! He needs our help now.

The votes of every member of Congress affect every American, so it’s important for all of us to pay attention to this important Congressional campaign in upstate New York. I am very pleased to announce my support for Doug Hoffman in his fight to be the next Representative from New York’s 23rd Congressional district. It’s my honor to endorse Doug and to do what I can to help him win, including having my political action committee, SarahPAC, donate to his campaign the maximum contribution allowed by law.

Our nation is at a crossroads, and this is once again a “time for choosing.”

The federal government borrows, spends, and prints too much money, while our national debt hits a record high. Government is growing while the private sector is shrinking, and unemployment is on the rise. Doug Hoffman is committed to ending the reckless spending in Washington, D.C. and the massive increase in the size and scope of the federal government. He is also fully committed to supporting our men and women in uniform as they seek to honorably complete their missions overseas.

And best of all, Doug Hoffman has not been anointed by any political machine.

Doug Hoffman stands for the principles that all Republicans should share: smaller government, lower taxes, strong national defense, and a commitment to individual liberty.

Political parties must stand for something. When Republicans were in the wilderness in the late 1970s, Ronald Reagan knew that the doctrine of “blurring the lines” between parties was not an appropriate way to win elections. Unfortunately, the Republican Party today has decided to choose a candidate who more than blurs the lines, and there is no real difference between the Democrat and the Republican in this race. This is why Doug Hoffman is running on the Conservative Party’s ticket.

Republicans and conservatives around the country are sending an important message to the Republican establishment in their outstanding grassroots support for Doug Hoffman: no more politics as usual.

You can help Doug by visiting his official website below and joining me in supporting his campaign:

So what’s wrong with Dede Scozzafava anyway?

If I read one more so-called journalist refer to Dede Scozzafava as a ‘moderate’… the very suggestion would be laughable but for the fact that in many cases, the clueless twits tossing the term around should know better.

If Dede Scozzafava were a moderate, she wouldn’t be in the situation she now finds herself in. A look at her record and her political history will reveal a tax-and-spend, pro-abortion, pro-gay marriage liberal who twice since 2008 considered running as a Democrat (once in early 2008 for a state senate seat, and once this year for this very race in which she’s now campaigning as a Republican), who supports card check legislation and taxpayer-funded abortions, and whose campaign has been funded primarily by abortion rights groups, the NEA, and labor unions.

There’s more to disqualify her for consideration, including her inexplicably bizarre behavior this week (calling the cops on a Weekly Standard reporter and her disastrous press conference in front of Hoffman’s office), but you get the picture.

Bottom line, Dede Scozzafava is no moderate, she is a Democrat – to the left even of her Democrat opponent in this race on some issues – with an R next to her name. It is the preponderance of the unprincipled ‘big tent’ RINO that is largely responsible for the current foundering of the Republican party; supporting unprincipled politicians the likes of Scozzafava will only drag them further into irrelevance.
